The ULPGC is located on the island of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). It was set up in May 1989 by the University Reorganization Law passed by the Canary Islands’ Parliament, which united the Canary Islands Polytechnic University (initially, in 1979, the Polytechnic University of Las Palmas), and other university centres on Gran Canaria, some of which dated back to the 19th century. It is, therefore, an institution that brings together a modern approach and many decades of experience.
The ULPGC offers a wide range of qualifications in all the major fields of learning. In 2008-2009, it offers: 54 undergraduate degrees, five of which are also offered on-line on the e-learning platform (Campus Virtual), 1 ULPGC degree course, 5 official postgraduate courses, 17 on-site post-graduate programmes, a further 27 on-line postgraduate programmes, 57 doctorate programmes and specific training programmes for senior citizens. Students at the ULPGC receive support for their on- site classes on the e-training platform and may also take booster courses in those subjects that tend to pose most problems during their first year.
There are more than 1,500 lecturers at the ULPGC carrying out important research work under the auspices of the University’s 161 research groups, some of which are leaders in their field at an international level. There are also 4 research centres and 4 University Research Institutes. The ULPGC currently leads 286 research projects.
